The BLACKS – The 7 Inch 7” (tricycle) – silkscreen cover, hand #ed out of 500
The Blacks are a sharply dressed San Francisco garage rock trio comprising of a female on lead vocals and guitar, a drummer and a really intense tambourine player/vocalist. On their first seven inch record, they reinterpret two songs: the A-Side is a cover of Amy Winehouse’s “Back to Black” and on the b-side they tackle the very sexy and catchy 80’s tune, “Never Say Never” originally by Romeo Void. They tend to play the Romeo Void cover live from time to time. The Blacks will be coming back through Texas again, this time for SXSW in March.
DOUBLE DAGGER – Ragged Rubble 12” (stationary heart) – Clear vinyl, double-sided/fully silk-screened sleeve and insert. Hand #ed out of 300 Note: Lyrics are available as a PDF on their website. Experimental punk, at times pop, trio of drums/mic/bass are fresh off the Baltimore Round Robin Tour. I first came across Double Dagger because their sinister and brooding song “Ruby” appears on Love & Circuits: A Cardboard Records Compilation, put out by Parts & Labor in 2007. Ragged Rubble was so addictive, that I went back to Good Records a few days later and bought their two seven inches (see below). Go to Double Dagger’s website for a generous amount of mp3s from their small catalog; including an infectious live set from WFMU.
DOUBLE DAGGER – Bored Meeting 7” (toxic pop) – liner notes and lyrics on inner sleeve
DOUBLE DAGGER – Sophisticated Urban Living 7” (terra firma limited) – lyrics and liner notes on inner sleeve
FIGHT BITE – Swissex Lover 7” (weshotjr) – I acquired this a weeks ago in an odd bartering situation. Yes vinyl is still as good as cash. This is the first release off the weshotjr.com label.
OBITS – One Cross Apiece/Put it in Writing 7” (stint) – First release, vinyl or otherwise, for Drive Like Jehu and Hot Snakes alumni, Rick Froberg’s new band. They will make their SXSW debut this year. The rest of Hot Snakes went on to form The Night Marchers. Anyone know what’s going on with Swami Records?
The TEENERS – Gold 7” (super secret) – Three tunes from another trashy Austin punk band. Something sets them apart from the herd.
UME – Sunshower EP (hulga)
On this Ep, the Austin rock trio showcases five new songs. Lead singer, “LLL”, reminds me of 90’s act Belly.
