Dullass Nights

7 May 2014

The Night Beats and Cosmonauts played great sets at Dada last Wednesday. Strange to have perfect hoodie weather on the last day of April, but I’m not complaining. The Night Beats sound much heavier live while Cosmonauts were pretty faithful to their recordings. Both bands have great drummers and Cosmonauts have two distinctive guitarists who complement each other quite well. I dropped the ball and missed the opener, a terrific band called Froth.

I am bummed out about missing the Alice Cooper documentary that apparently showed only twice at Angelika.

White Hills and Natural Child played City Tavern on Thursday. Natural Child played a fun set as always, I will always see them play when they pass through. I wasn’t feeling White Hills that night but I guess it was just me because they sounded great at Austin Psych Fest over the weekend.

Temples played Dada Friday and apparently sold a shitload of tickets.

Psych Fest was cool but I started my period on the first day while The Fresh & Onlys were playing so that kind of put a damper on things. Highlights for me were Steve Gunn, Yamantanka // Sonic Titan, Aqua Nebula Oscillator, Zombie Zombie, Earthless (pretty sure they played the best set of the entire festival), and Loop. It was a great festival all things considered, and laidback enough for a fat middle-aged guy like yours truly.

Sunday night I smoked a bed bug and let me be the first to tell you, it lives up to the hype. I’m gonna start a bed bug farm so hit me up if you’re looking to score and I’ll learn you the technique. Bleeding Rainbow and The Chloes played City Tavern last night. At first I was blown away by the drummer for Bleeding Rainbow but that is a tight band all around and they really click. The Chloes played a fun set and their drummer looks like Alison Brie.

Sure, I figured I would go to Dada this Friday and have a look at the spawn of John just for the heck of it even if the last thing I remember liking from Sean Lennon was that fleshed out T-Rex cover. But I am now very excited about this show. I am really surprised at how much I like the two albums from The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger, the music is strange yet accessible.

Until next week.
