PORTRAYAL OF GUILT • Chat Pile

To say Portrayal of Guilt write grim songs is an understatement. Since forming in 2017, the Austin trio has been a flowing fountain of fatalism, spewing harsh and brutal sentiments across their releases. Now, on their second album, We Are Always Alone, the band turns the nihilism inwards and explores the notion of eternal isolation.

FROZEN SOUL • SANGUISUABOGG

Live at Club Dada in Dallas on November 6th – FROZEN SOUL’s brand of straightforward, in-your-face death metal is a gasp of fresh air in a genre that’s stretched the very limits of technicality. Fully formed in 2018, the quintet has rapidly made a name for itself and churned the underground with a sound that evokes the old school sound of bands like Obituary, Mortician, and Bolt Thrower. That reverence for death metal’s roots was apparent from Frozen Soul’s initial four-song Encased in Ice demo, which includes a cover of Mortician’s “Witch’s Coven” and was released in early 2019 on California’s Maggot Stomp Records. FROZEN SOUL entered the studio in early March 2020 to record its first full-length with former guitarist Daniel Schmuck handling production and mixing duties. Crypt of Ice is nothing short of a breath of very fresh and very cold air on death metal’s fiery landscape. From re-recorded demo tracks including the call-to-arms of “Encased in Ice” and the savage frost blister of “Wraith of Death” to the brutal, pummeling, and momentous guitar churn of “Arctic Stranglehold,” FROZEN SOUL have delivered a record that embraces the genre’s past while pushing death metal forward with frigid force.

SKATING POLLY • KTJ & Carly

There’s a difficult to describe, yet timeless quality to certain songs that transcends genre or era. It’s something that you can’t fake or contrive and it’s what lies at the core of Skating Polly’s music. The multi instrumentalist duo of Kelli Mayo and Peyton Bighorse started their band in Oklahoma in 2009. They recorded their debut album Taking Over The World in 2010 and achieved instant acclaim from underground music icons like X’s Exene Cervenka (who produced 2013’s Lost Wonderfuls) and Beat Happening’s Calvin Johnson (who produced 2014’s Fuzz Steliacoom.) After the release of 2016’s The Big Fit, Veruca Salt’s co-frontwomen Louise Post and Nina Gordon reached out and said they wanted to write with the band. What started as a writing session ultimately became 2017’s New Trick EP. Armed with a third member—Kelli’s brother Kurtis Mayo—the trio released their latest full length, The Make It All Show in 2018 and two singles, Play House and Flyer, in 2019.   The female-driven alternative acts that inspired the band such as Veruca Salt, X, The Breeders, L7 and Babes In Toyland (the later of whom Skating Polly toured with in Europe) aren’t typical reference points for most of today’s up-and-coming bands, but maybe they should be. “The thing that we identify with in a lot of those bands is that they can be really aggressive and loud while also being super melodic,” Kelli explains, adding that the new dynamic in the band helped them be more expansive when it came to their sound and arrangements. “Everything happened very smoothly when Kurtis became part of the band. It just felt natural having him there and writing with him.” In typical Skating Polly fashion, the trio will still be switching instruments live, something that’s become a hallmark of their performances and one that opens up more possibilities with the additional instrumentation on The Make It All Show.    Skating Polly really need to be seen in a club to fully grasp what makes them so special. “It can get pretty chaotic when we’re playing. People have said it feels like it could fall apart at any moment but in a good way,” Bighorse says with a laugh. “We try to make our music honest and engaging and I think that’s what drew us to people like Nina and Louise or Exene; you can probably guess a lot of the acts that we love, but we’re able to keep making music that always sounds like us,” Mayo explains. “We really try to make the songs the focus instead of trying to flaunt technical musical abilities,” adds Bighorse – and that honesty and optimism is why everyone from legendary musical figures as well as hardcore fans have gravitated toward Skating Polly’s music. The Make It All Show is the most fully realized work by Skating Polly yet and hints at an even brighter future for one of rock’s most promising acts.  

KIKAGAKU MOYO

October 31st at Deep Ellum Art Co. – Kikagaku Moyo have come a long way – both literally and metaphorically – since their humble beginnings busking on the streets of Tokyo back in 2012. A tight-knit group of five friends who bonded over the desire to play freely, and explore music associated with space and psychedelia, their initial ambitions were modest – semi-regular slots in the cramped clubs of the city’s insular music scene. Yet the band’s progressive, folk-influenced take on psychedelia marked them out from their peers and re-started Japan’s psych rock scene; it also brought them international acclaim. With a settled line up – Go Kurosawa (drums, vox), Ryu Kurosawa (sitar), Tomo Katsurada (guitar, vox), Daoud Popal (guitar), Kotsuguy (bass) – and a signature sound that blended classical Indian music, Krautrock, traditional folk, 70s rock, and acid-tinged psych, the band sold out shows across Europe and founded their own label, Guruguru Brain, to showcase not just their own work, but the under-represented music scene in East Asia.

NATION OF LANGUAGE • Public Practice

Brooklyn-based synth auteurs Nation of Language entered 2020 as one of the most heralded new acts of recent memory, having only released a handful of singles but already earning high-praise from the likes of NME, FADER, Stereogum, Pitchfork, etc.. Now in 2021, they continue to turn heads having released one of the most critically acclaimed debut albums of last year ‘ Introduction, Presence’ ) and recent breakout single ‘A Different Kind of Life’. The band’s ability to blend the upbeat with a healthy dose of sardonic melancholy made it a staple on year-end ‘Best of 2020’ lists, led PASTE magazine to dub the album ‘The most exciting synth-pop debut in years’ , and landed the band major radio play from The BBC, KCRW, KEXP, SiriusXM and countless others. Inspired by the early new-wave and punk movements, the band quickly earned a reputation for delivering frenzied nights of unconventional bliss to rapt audiences, and established themselves as bright young stars emerging from a crowded NYC landscape.

GEORGE CLANTON • Magdalena Bay • Negative Gemini

October 27th – GEORGE CLANTON • Magdalena Bay • Negative Gemini at Deep Ellum Art Co. George Clanton first became a known in 2011 as an early leader in the sample-based subgenre “Vaporwave” using the anonymous moniker “ESPRIT 空想”. His 2014 release Virtua.zip is considered by many to be the first vaporwave album composed wholly of original compositions. In 2015, Clanton temporarily dropped the monikers and released an album of vocal-driven pop songs. This record, 100% Electronica was named one of top 10 albums of 2015 by Gorilla Vs Bear. In 2016, Clanton was invited to open for Sophie and Charli XCX at Gorilla Vs Bear’s 2016 SXSW showcase, which Yahoo Music called “the best thing we saw at SXSW all week.” Following that performance George Clanton formed a record label with his girlfriend Negative Gemini, also called “100% Electronica.” They have been touring and releasing new music from other notable internet niche artists ever since. One of the most notable releases was Clanton’s own remix album 200% Electronica, which sold all 1000 copies within a month of its release in November 2017. On August 18th 2018, George premiered his latest album Slide in front of a sold out audience at Brooklyn New York’s “Elsewhere”. Shortly after selling out all copies on pre-order reservations alone, Slide went on to receive positive reviews from Pitchfork and The Needle Drop where Anthony Fantano deemed it “orgasmic.”
