Top 11 shows/experiences/whatever of 2011

What Cheer? Brigade is a huge band, and we saw a lot in 2011, so once we got going on this list, it was hard to pick just 11 things. Nevertheless,in no particular order, here they are:
1. Karaoke at the Goat, Dallas,TX. After our fun show at Good Records back in March, set up by Parade of Flesh, an enthusiastic trio of locals, Lance, Brandon and Andrew, calling themselves “Mr. Greenville Ave” took us to the Goat where they bought us round after round of Jägerbombs while we crooned our guts out. We remember this as one of the most fun nights we’ve ever had on tour, which is amazing because the day before, we played:
2. Mardi Gras in New Orleans. Yes, it’s as fun as they say, and what people don’t often realize is that there is a Mardi Gras for every kind of person, from jock to whatever kind of unrepentant weirdo you are. Speaking of New Orleans…
3. Bounce music. New Orleans’ homegrown brand of party rap was the soundtrack to the inside of our vans this year. We got to play with two masters of the genre: Queen Diva Big Freedia and up-and-comer Vockah Redu.
4. Mountain Man live at the Newport Folk Festival. Even on record, their ghostly three party harmonies feel jarringly intimate. So the fact that they nail it live gives you an excited, nervous knot in your stomaching like you’re witnessing something you shouldn’t.
5. Touring with Math the Band. Math the Band is a hyper-positive synthpunk duo from Providence, and in some form or another, they have been on tour since they were 15. This is exactly who you want to finish the liquor before hitting the Canadian border. Kevin from Math the Band has a stomach condition that causes him to vomit uncontrollably when he gets worked up, which he always does while performing.
6. Humanbeast – queer marriage (released on their own Gross Domestic Product label). This married couple hails from Arkansas but has parked it in Providence for the time being. Their music is filled with beauty and terror, and their live show, which typically involves live bondage, is the most engaging thing in noise music right now.
7. Young Fellaz Brass Band. This is a great New Orleans brass band we played with a few times this year but still have no idea how to track down.
8. Square dancing at the Viking Inn. Our tour this summer took us through the town of Viroqua, WI (pop. 5,000), which for some reason has a disproportionately high number of cool people, all of whom square danced before our show. Tal, the Israeli guy in our band, had never seen square dancing before, and he said, in his cute accent, “It is very sexy, right? It is allowed to dance with your neighbor’s wife.”
9. Toronto. Did you know that the biggest city in Canada is beautiful and cosmopolitan, but also clean and filled with nice people? We fell in love with it.
10. Javelin – Canyon Candy (Luaka Bop). The perfect soundtrack to slow summer drives.
11. Covering Eno’s “Here Come the Warm Jets” in the pouring rain in Boston. One of the great things about being in a brass band is that you can play in the rain without stopping. The people who stick around are hardcore. Add a classic song, and you’ve got an instant memory.
